Miniature Dachshunds (or "Doxies") are small, bold German hounds known for their long bodies, short legs, and big personalities, originally bred for hunting, they are now popular, affectionate, and spunky companions, great watchdogs due to their alertness, but require careful handling to protect their sensitive backs and consistent training to manage their stubbornness. They come in smooth, long, and wire-haired coats.

History

Miniature Dachshunds originated in Germany from the larger "badger dogs" (Dachshunds) by selectively breeding smaller dogs in the 1800s, specifically to hunt rabbits and other small burrowing animals in smaller tunnels, evolving from the standard badger-hunting dogs used for bigger game like badgers and foxes. These tenacious, bold dogs, known for their scenting ability, became popular pets and show dogs, eventually gaining recognition as a separate size category alongside standards.
