History

The Coton de Tulear is a breed of small, white-haired dog from Madagascar. Named after the port town of Tulear in Madagascar, Coton de Tulear dogs were historically prized by sailors who traveled to the island. The breed is believed to have descended from two different types of Bichon, the Bichon Maltese and the Bichon Teneriffe. This wonderfully friendly and clownish breed was originally kept by aristocrats on the island as well as members of the Malagasy court and even makes an appearance in folklore tales. While these white-haired pooches remained popular on their home island for centuries, they did not spread to other parts of the world until more recently due to strict quarantine measures imposed by other countries. Today, they are beloved family pets around the globe!

Temperament

This small but mighty breed is full of life, very smart, and protective of their family. Cotons have a cheerful disposition and can easily make friends with people they encounter; they are generally even-tempered, loyal, and obedient. Many owners describe these dogs as having a constant smile on their face – which perhaps contributes to their reputation as being great pets for families of all sizes.
