History

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a majestic breed whose development dates back centuries. Though its exact origin remains unknown, many believe the Roman invasion of Switzerland resulted in Roman mastiffs being crossed with Swiss flock-guarding dogs to create this working dog. The Industrial Revolution nearly caused their extinction when machine use replaced manual labor for which they were most useful; however, some dedicated breeders ensured the existence of these animals and brought them to America's shores as early as 1926!
