The Portuguese Water Dog, often referred to as "Portie" or "PWD," is an intelligent and energetic breed originally from Portugal. These dogs possess a unique history as they were once highly valued by fishermen for their incredible swimming abilities and for performing various tasks on boats, such as retrieving broken gear or even herding fish into nets. Blessed with a sturdy build, they have webbed feet that aid them while swimming and a waterproof coat that comes in curly or wavy varieties. Additionally, their hypoallergenic fur makes them an ideal companion for people with allergies.

History

These talented pups share a common ancestor with the Poodle, another renowned water dog. Portuguese fishermen once relied on these furry helpers to round up fish for their nets and fetch items from the depths. However, as fishing methods evolved in the 1900s, the Portuguese Water Dog's charm began to wane. Thankfully, American enthusiasts brought them out of the shadows, and in 1983, the spirited breed finally made its splash in the American Kennel Club.
