About Australian Cattle Dogs

The Australian Cattle Dog is an energetic and loyal working breed. Originally developed for droving herds of cattle over long distances, this highly intelligent, alert and agile breed retains its natural instinct to work with and protect livestock. They are part of the herding group that requires plenty of exercise and interactive playtime to stay happy and healthy, as well as lots of mental stimulation from obedience training and puzzle solving activities.

History

Australia's hardy cattle drovers were looking for a special kind of dog to help them with their rugged terrain, so in the 19th century they created an incredible canine hybrid - The Australian Cattle Dog. Known by its blue-ish coat and tough nature as 'Blue Heelers' or Queensland Heelers, these steadfast companions are still called on today when life gets wild down under!

Temperament

Not only are they incredibly obedient, brave and loyal companions, but their high energy levels require a great deal of exercise - both physical and mental. Otherwise these clever canines could become bored easily, leading to destructive behavior which is why this breed isn't recommended for apartment living or households in which they'll be left alone frequently. It's important to note that Australian Cattle Dogs tend towards the territorial side so proper socializing from an early age with lots of different people and environments helps greatly in keeping them friendly around strangers yet devoted to owners at home. Training-wise firmness combined with positive reinforcement goes far when teaching your Aussie what you expect out them - just remember how smart AND stubborn this pupper can be!
